FAQs
What riding gear is necessary for a Ladakh trip?
Essential gear includes a full-face helmet, protective riding jacket and pants, gloves, knee and elbow guards, and sturdy riding boots. Layering with thermal wear and a waterproof outer layer is recommended due to varying temperatures.
Is mobile network available during the Ladakh trip?
Network coverage is limited. Postpaid connections from BSNL, Airtel, and Jio work in some parts of Ladakh, with BSNL offering the widest reach. Remote areas like Umling La and Hanle may not have any network.
What is the difficulty level of the Ladakh circuit for bikers?
The difficulty level is moderate to challenging, mainly due to rough terrain, altitude, and long hours of riding.
What’s the altitude of Umling La, and how does it compare to Khardung La?
Umling La stands at 19,024 ft (5,800 m), making it higher than Khardung La (18,379 ft). It’s the highest motorable road globally, and riding here requires good acclimatization and caution.
How long is the average daily riding distance?
The average daily distance is 100-200 km, depending on the terrain and weather conditions. Expect some longer days on the road, especially during transitions between major stops like Manali to Leh.
Is there a dress code or clothing recommendations for the trip?
Dress in layers to adapt to temperature changes. Start with thermal wear, followed by a fleece jacket, windproof jacket, and waterproof layer. A balaclava, gloves, and thick socks are essential. Avoid cotton as it retains moisture.
Can I ride my bike during night hours on the Ladakh route?
Night riding is generally not recommended due to limited visibility, the risk of encountering wild animals, and unpredictable weather. We also conclude our rides by sunset for safety.
Will I get any training or briefing before the trip?
Yes, pre-trip briefing covering the route, safety measures, altitude adaptation, and bike handling tips.
How early should I book this trip?
Booking at least 2-3 months in advance is advisable, especially if you’re planning to travel during peak season (June-September). Early booking ensures availability and allows time for permit processing.
Are vegetarian or vegan meal options available?
Vegetarian meals are commonly available in Ladakh. Vegan options can be arranged but may be limited in remote areas, so it’s advisable to inform the tour operator in advance of dietary preferences.
